Stage One: The Story Often Predates the Script
Someone has already picked which story is worth the wager before anyone shouts «action» on a short drama set. When you trace a few hits backward, you often discover a book at the start of the process. Based on the novel Shutout by Jami Davenport, ReelShort’s Breaking the Ice is a 2024 hockey romance built around a secret child. On November 1, 2025, ReelShort launched Bound by Honor, a mafia arranged-marriage series adapted from a novel by Cora Reilly. In Korea, a web novel and webtoon watch reel shorts are the basis for the 2026 office romance Quiet in the Office!, which carries a 19+ age rating. Several app owners also operate reading businesses, so source material sits close at hand: Holywater operates the books app My Passion, Crazy Maple Studio makes the interactive-story app Chapters, and GoodShort’s Google Play developer name is GoodNovel. Without a book, writers turn to tested tropes such as revenge, billionaire romance, identity reveals and family drama. Compressing a long drama story into scenes that each deliver a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds is the script’s task.
Stage Two: Casting Recognizable Faces
On screen, the format’s economics show up in casting. On IMDb, the cast lists for short series keep repeating the same names. Noah Fearnley starred in ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha in 2024 and returned in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star. On GoodShort in 2025, Rosa Singerman headlined both Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia, starring opposite Franky Cammarata in the latter. With a following on one app, a lead gets a head start at the next title, and that matters a great deal when a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over. In Los Angeles, DramaBox runs a production team. Studios also cast with a particular viewer in mind: TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women.
Stage Three: Seventy Episodes Shot in About Eight Days
According to TheWrap, a Western short drama usually costs $150,000 to $300,000 per series and is filmed in eight to ten days. Wikipedia’s overview of the format is similar, placing $150,000 to $250,000 on a seven- to ten-day shoot for 50 to 70 or more episodes. A 70-episode series shot in eight days works out to close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day, if you do the arithmetic. Chinese producers selling abroad have reported slimmer numbers still, with Jiuzhou Culture putting a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. On a per-episode basis, that comes to roughly $1,400 to $2,100 for each finished episode. Dubbed Chinese adaptations made up about 80 percent of the more than 600 titles Jiuzhou reported it had made for overseas markets, while original overseas productions made up 20 percent. The pricey shoot happens only once, since dubbing lets a studio repurpose a finished domestic series.
Stage Four: Slicing to 60–100 Seconds
In the edit suite, the footage is sliced into episodes of 60 to 100 seconds, framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone. Each episode is designed around a question the next one promises to answer, because at that length it has room for a turn or two of plot. Cliffhangers are the house style, acting as the mechanism that moves you from one installment to the next. Piece those segments together and a 70-episode series comes to roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time. Episode counts differ widely by title, and GoodShort’s official pages list 30 episodes for My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen and 100 for The Dragon King’s Return. Viewers who never open the app can still see the same footage, since ReelShort also runs official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. In other words, editors are cutting video dramas for multiple screens at once.
Stage Five: Placing the Paywall
The final creative decision is also a commercial one. According to TheWrap, the standard model makes the first eight to ten episodes free. ReelShort’s own blog places its free run at usually five to 15 episodes, and TheWrap counted the first eight in 2024. From then on, episodes are unlocked with coins; ReelShort’s blog lists the standard cost of an episode as about 60 coins. You can also buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and renews automatically, or earn coins by watching ads, with one ad unlocking two premium episodes according to the same blog. Prices differ by platform, country and promotion, so your store may display something different. Along with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs, paywalls landing right on a cliffhanger are among the most common complaints about these apps, so placement is the controversial part. Coin generators and modded «unlimited coins» apps that promise a way around the wall are unofficial and best avoided.
Stage Six: Animated and AI-Generated Series
In the latest production stage, the camera drops out entirely. ReelShort’s live-action library is now joined by animated motion comics. The Lost Heir is a 58-episode family saga about Arthur Lancaster: he loses his memory saving his brother, grows up on a farm as «Johnny» and in the end unmasks the foster sister who kept framing him. Shattered Vows, a 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, lists no cast: it is an AI-generated animated motion comic about heiress Vanessa Windsor seeking revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer escape. A separate 58-episode ShortMax series shares the name, and the two should not be confused. DramaWave has gone farthest: according to 36Kr, more than 80 percent of its newly released content is AI-generated, and the outlet also reported that the app’s annualized revenue passed $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island featuring fruit contestants, showed on TikTok in March 2026 that AI video dramas have spread beyond the apps too, before critics widely labeled it «AI slop».
Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Joins the Line
The clearest example of established studios taking notice is Fox Entertainment. Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, accepted an equity investment from Fox in October 2025. Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside are among the Fox-produced series already on the app, and Fox has also committed to producing more than 200 vertical titles over two years. Holywater raised a further $22 million in January 2026 in a round led by Horizon Capital, and My Drama took the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service. The eight-day shoot, it seems, has gone from curiosity to line item, now that a network-scale producer is committing to that volume.
The Production Line in Brief
Set side by side, the stages bring the logic of the business into focus. The shoot is the expensive, fixed block, and much of the rest is arranged around it. The edit is built around cliffhangers that feed a paywall, casting leans on familiar faces, and scripts tend to arrive pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes. TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category, even though fans who search for a «reel short drama» usually have ReelShort titles in mind. Using only publicly reported figures, the table below summarizes typical time and cost at each stage. It says so rather than guessing where no reliable figure has been published.
| Stage of production | Typical time / cost | What takes place |
|---|---|---|
| Source material and script | No public figure | A novel, web fiction or proven trope is turned into a script; Breaking the Ice comes from Shutout, Bound by Honor from Cora Reilly’s novel |
| Cast selection | No published figure | Leads are chosen, often actors with earlier short-drama credits; animated titles skip this step |
| Filming | 7–10 days; $150K–250K (Wikipedia) or $150K–300K per series (TheWrap); $100K–150K per 70 episodes (Jiuzhou) | 50 to 70+ episodes are shot for a vertical frame |
| The edit | Episodes lasting 60–100 seconds | The footage is sliced into installments that each end on a cliffhanger |
| Release and the paywall | First 8–10 episodes free (TheWrap); about 60 coins for each later episode on ReelShort | Viewers unlock episodes with coins, ads or a weekly pass of about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 |
| AI and animated series | Costs not disclosed | Motion comics including The Lost Heir and Shattered Vows; over 80 percent of DramaWave’s new releases AI-generated |
| Studio co-productions | 200+ titles across two years (Fox for My Drama) | Vertical series for an app are produced by an established studio |
